When the industry was first starting to explore ways to help youth bowlers with their college educations, a platform called the Grand Prix Scholarship Program was developed. The program was embraced by numerous state proprietor associations, with minor tweaks made in each to adhere to state laws and scholastic regulations.
Now, the Bowling Centers of Southern California is preparing to disperse the approximately $200,000 left over from when its former Grand Prix Foundation transferred funds to SMART in 2010. The amount represents unused funds from participating youth bowlers who aged out, and BCSC must either award those funds by mid-February 2024 or they will be re-allocated by SMART for scholarships all over the country.
The BCSC Tournament Committee has now created a program to award these funds. Centers may run qualifier tournaments through the rest of 2023 and BCSC will allocate $6,000 to each center for in-house scholarships. Then a $100,000 finals event will be held at Cal Bowl in Lakewood next Jan. 13-14.
