BPAA past President Nancy Schenk and her husband Gary Schenk of B&B Lanes in Fayetteville, North Carolina, met on the North Carolina State bowling team. Now, their son Alex is attending the same university, but was saddened to discover that there no longer was a competitive club team for him to join.
He did find a social bowling club, and attended a session one Sunday to see if anyone would be interested in bowling competitively. He found four other young men, and that’s when his parents went to work.
In just two weeks, with the help of the N.C. State Students and USBC Collegiate, the N.C. State Competition Bowling Team was restarted.
Gary Schenk is driving to Buffaloe Lanes North in Raleigh each Wednesday to coach the team, and the team is hoping to be at its first competition late this month or in early December.
Meanwhile, Schenk is looking for additional coaching help so a second weekly practice session can be scheduled. Anyone interesting in helping — or in reestablishing another collegiate bowling program in central North Carolina — can contact the Schenks at B&B Lanes.
