The death toll from the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that hit Japan’s west coast on Jan. 1 climbed above the 100 mark 10 days into the new year, with approximately 200 still unaccounted for.
The earthquake — the country’s deadliest in eight years — left 23,000 homes without power as it destroyed or badly damaged key infrastructure.
A video from @UnH1a, via Spectee, posted online showed the shaking inside a bowling center in Ishikawa Prefecture. The video began with the sound of what amounted to a very large strike — virtually all of the center’s pins hitting the decks at the same time.
The center sustained minor damage but fared far better than some commercial buildings and many homes in the prefecture. After-shocks have continued to test nerves in the days since the quake.
