AZIA MARTIN RECEIVES $25,000 FREWING SCHOLARSHIP

Azia Martin has been honored as the 2024 recipient of the Daroll and Dolores Frewing Scholarship for children or grandchildren of Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America members.

Martin, the granddaughter of Linda Gamble, proprietor of Paradise Lanes Family Entertainment Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina, was brought to the stage this morning at the Gaylord Rockies Resort, which is hosting BPAA’s International Bowl Expo. The scholarship is valued at $25,000.

A special committee working under the auspices of the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame in Arlington, Texas, selects the annual honoree based on submitted applications, and considers scholastic achievement, letters of recommendation, community service, an essay and a video.

“I believe the committee has selected an outstanding young person for the fifth year in a row,” said Daroll Frewing, founder of US Bowling Corporation, who established the scholarship in 2020 with his wife Dolores (Dee) as a way of thanking families in the bowling business, an industry that has meant so much to the Frewing family through the years.

“Azia has overcome a number of obstacles yet approaches life and her studies with a positive attitude and a determination that I’m certain will take her far.”

Martin graduated from James F. Byrnes High School in Spartanburg, and will soon begin attending Palm Beach Atlantic University, a Christian college in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she plans to major in exercise science with a focus in occupational therapy. Her entire course of study could span six to eight years, so the $25,000 scholarship “will be a huge help,” Martin said.

Look for a special feature story on Martin in the August issue of Bowling Center Management magazine, the official publication of the BPAA.

Past recipients of the Daroll and Dolores Frewing Scholarship: 2020 — Andrew Amore; 2021 — Avery Schenk; 2022 — Emma McCrary; 2023 — Aaliyah Friend. A special display at the IBMHOF is devoted to the award and its winners.

Amore is the first Frewing scholarship recipient to complete college, having recently earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a triple major in business, economics and marketing from Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio.
