Pizza sales have long supported many bowling center businesses, and that marriage has been flipped at American Flatbread, a pizza chain that now offers candlepin bowling in three of its 11 restaurants.
The most recent opening may be the most significant, as it marks the return of candlepin bowling to the city where the sport was invented in 1880: Worcester, Massachusetts.
A new American Flatbread restaurant is part of a mixed-use development called The Cove in the city’s Canal District and features 10 candlepin lanes.
“It’s an honor to bring a piece of Worcester’s history back with the return of candlepin,” said Thomas Keane, owner of American Flatbread, in a media release. “We hope the local food and drinks we provide, plus the camaraderie of a game of candlepin, add to the flavor of Worcester’s already vibrant downtown scene.”
The last candlepin center in Worcester was Colonial Bowling Center, which closed its doors for good in May 2020 after 60 years in business.
