Chestnut Lanes in Barnesville, Ohio, sustained devastating damage in fire that broke out late Monday morning.
Barnesville Fire Chief Tim Hall said the building is “pretty much a total.”
According to reports, nobody had been in the building since around 1 a.m., when the center closed for the night. A cause for the fire has not yet been determined.
The eight-lane center’s Facebook page has numerous posts from long-time customers offering condolences. In a Thursday morning post, the center’s owner offered these four words: “Thanks for the memories.”
While located in eastern Ohio, Barnesville is part of the Wheeling, W.V., metropolitan area. It’s known for its Pumpkin Festival, featuring a “Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off” that awards $2 per pound to the winner, held each September.
