Jim and Julie Prott scored a narrow seven-pin victory over Curtis Suchan Sr. and Curtis Suchan Jr. to claim the $3,000 first-place prize in the 2021 Xtravaganza, an annual fundraiser for the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame in Arlington, Texas.
The unique doubles tournament consists of eight games, each with a different format, bowled over two days. Rolling either a strike or a gutter ball in any frame results in a score of zero for that frame.
The Protts outscored the Suchans, 988-981.
Impressively, the team of Jamie Brooks and Al Blough — a combined 171 years in age — finished third with 963. Brooks is a member of the USBC Open Championships’ 100,000-pin club, as is Bob Hart, who also was on hand for the event.
All told, 15 of the 90 doubles teams cashed for a minimum of $350 (there was a tie for the final $700 payoff), but the big winner was the museum, for which more than $85,000 was raised through a combination of entry fees, a silent auction, shirt sales and a wine grab bag event.
The 11th Xtravaganza is scheduled for June 2-5, 2022, again at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas.
