The deadline for the richest scholarship in bowling — the Daroll and Dolores Frewing Scholarship — is fast approaching. College-bound high school seniors have until April 17 to submit their applications and supporting materials.
What makes the scholarship unique — beyond its $25,000 value — is the fact that it is open only to sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters of BPAA-member bowling center proprietors. That means in any given year, the competition for the award may be somewhat limited, giving high school seniors an excellent opportunity to win.
A special panel reviews all applications and makes its selection based on a combination of scholastic excellence and community involvement. Because other scholarships are available for on-the-lanes performance, the Frewing Scholarship focuses more on citizenship.
The Frewings, who founded US Bowling Corporation, introduced the program as a way of giving back to an industry that has been good to them.
Recipients thus far: 2020 — Andrew Amore; 2021 — Avery Schenk; 2022 — Emma McCrary; 2023 — Aaliyah Friend; 2024 — Azia Martin; 2025 — Ellie Boley.
The 2026 scholarship winner will be honored during International Bowl Expo in Nashville, Tennessee, and be the subject of the cover story in the August issue of BCM.
